There are not very many people on the forum. The new website is very good, BUT, the forum is far to difficult to access or get access to. The old bulletin board worked and this does not. Allen had an awful time getting me in and it would not accept my regular e-mail address at all. He had to use an old AOL address that I do not use any more. If it remains this complicated and difficult there will not be many users.

I, too, am missing the old bulletin board activity. I had no issue getting access to the forums once I read (and reread) the instructions. People just need to jump in and start using the new forum-based system. As to having trouble getting access to the forums, I guess that this is an issue for Allen.

Any new system will have issues. That said, yes, it’s true I had some problems trying to get Richard onto the forums, but it did occur and he’s now posting.

Sorry to have to say this in this manner, but we’re not going back to the old system. Yes, it did work but it was archaic, dated, and did not offer nearly as much capability as this newer system offers. I dare offer that those who are lamenting the old system have not yet explored this new system and what it can do.

Please consider this and dive in!

I have kept pretty good tabs on the forums and am prepared to deal with issues, such as what Richard encountered – that was a head-scratcher and the only fix was to use an old AOL email address – but I would say that that (and any other email address) would not not be used very often, if at all, in communicating via this forum. Using an email address is only a criterion for registration, not for communicating.

As always, you gentlemen are free to use this forum – or not. It’s totally up to you.

The USA and North Korea meeting in Viet Nam. I never thought it would happen for the 2nd time; previous administrations did nothing but TALK. Now the other side of the political spectrum will critcize our efforts. Anything to downgrade progress for world peace. It’s better to talk then to destroy!!! each other. To change the subject; is there a danger at the southern border? between Mexico and the states involved? Many elected officials say NO. Real fools.

Politics and religion are 2 subjects guaranteed to start arguments here. I agree that they should be banned.

Politics and religion should be discussed in my opinion. What happened during our tour of duty is important; but what is happening now is more important. To many people live in the past; I care about what’s important now; religion and politics.

Once you get signed in, the board is a lot more modern than other archaic one.
The font type and size are not my favorite.

Oh, the old days, when you went to the board and could always find something, Scott or someone else was posting. Things will never get back to the way they were, so I guess checking the board every day will change to checking it once every 2 or 3 weeks.

Well, four and almost 5 months have gone by since new web site went on line and I started checking it only once every 3 weeks to see what has been posted.  Well posting for this period averages 10.5 per month, which is lower than the old web site.  I guess the new site has not been welcomed by a majority of the membership because of the new format.  I of course was never active in posting but did enjoy reading all the issues and comments.   My main reason for joining BUSMA years ago was just to read most of Reinhardt’s postings and to see what he was posting on his web site.  Well, those days are gone it seems, which comes with change———but I will keep checking the web site hoping something interesting will get posted.

Well, it will soon be time for members to start renewing their memberships. Based on the new web page and the number of people using it compared to the old web site, could it be that renewals of membership will drop off. Losing Reinhard’s web site and then our Old Web Site being changed, seems to have had a negative effect with the membership. Come renewal time, what happens will probably tell the future for BUSMA.

Hello Theodore.  I’ve noticed not much being posted as before. I believe some members may have a problem understanding how to log onto the new BUSMVA website. In other words not PC literate. No disrespect to anyone. It took awhile for me to finally log on; and I consider myself PC literate. Not bragging at all. I’m paid up for 2020 BUSMVA membership. Anyhow keep up the good work; keep reminding members “on how to do it”.

Theodore I agree with what you posted. Maybe we are all getting older. No problem with that; how can we stop it.  We are still here. Not many people I talk to have no idea about the Berlin stuff that happened during our tour. Ok with that. Let’s enjoy our tour via BUSMVA. Will be offline for several days. Will be visiting friends near Houton, Maine. My former CO from my Berlin unit is buried at St. Monica’s Cemetery. Capt. G. Weeks. Former enlisted ; OCS  retired as Lt. Col.  Really good person. May he rest in peace.

Ed, Over the years when I mention that I was in Berlin ,66-69  287th MP, and bring up Steinstucken no one has ever heard of it and I can see why. What a unique place. Hard to explain  what Stein was . Was at a social club I belong to last weekend with my BUSMVA shirt on and the Berlin Emblem and one of the guys sitting at the bar came over to our table and said I thought I recognized the emblem on your shirt. Introduced ourselves , his first name is Paul , and he said he was there 87 to 91 in the 42 engineers. Showed him my BUSMVA card and told him about it and how to join.

      Great story, Larry!

The 298th Army Band went to Steinstücken only a couple times during my time (83-91), but each time the people living there could not have been more welcoming. We enjoyed playing in that very small community.

I was surprised to learn recently that the short road connecting West Berlin and Steinstücken wasn’t always there, which explains why the Huey helicopter is on display in that community.

      Map of Steinstücken attached.

Every three or four days the helicopter would land in the open field at Andrews and 3 MP’s would be ready with food etc. to get on and go down to Stein and relieve the other three that were there.

Excellent point. I heard recently that helicopters would land at Andrews, but I had never seen that in my time.

Apparently the road from West Berlin to Stein was built after the 1971 Tripartite agreement was reached that ceded that narrow strip of land to the West. In exchange, 4 million Marks were paid to the East German government and a couple of unoccupied “exclaves” were also given to them.

Seems like a good deal. Those 200 inhabitants of Stein no longer had to process through two VoPo checkpoints just to get a loaf of bread and other groceries.

In that little is being discussed, perhaps a review of this book may give all of us something to think about and then discuss. Please check on Amazon books:

An Imaginative Existence: A Provocative Essay on Causation, Manifestation, and Finality of Being – Kindle and Paperback at Amazon Books

There can be no more important inquiry than the one that begins quite simply: Why do we exist? In his thoughtful and thought-provoking deliberation on this age-old question, Dr. Manuel English reflects on the nature, causation and finality of existence, the role of God and mind in this magnificent phenomenon and the distinctions to be made between being and becoming, and between matter and mind. Using metaphysical-philosophical, cosmological, and ontological tenets, an introspective analysis is offered providing insightful answers to these mega-questions. Eschewing the narrow focus and abstruse rhetoric which causes so many readers to shun modern philosophy, Dr. English’s work is striking in its concern for genuine insight and independent, original thought. His reflective commentary and conclusions are dynamic and exciting, challenging the conventional ontological landscape while offering a new paradigm of how we should think about our existence. It’s destined to become a classic.
