Hot and humid here in Illinois also. I cannot remember any hot and humid weather in Berlin. When I left Berlin Feb. 7 1969 no snow on the ground.

Had AIT training at Fort Gordon, Georgia for MP’s  and arrived in Berlin on Aug. 1,1966 and went to the 287th MP Company. Never realized at the time what a great duty assignment I had. Went to Wildflicken for two weeks and one of guys I was with in AIT was there and he told me how good the assignment in Berlin was and wished he had ended up there. Left Berlin on Feb. 7,1969. What a great time there and all the memories.

Same here in Northern Illinois. Some restrictions were relaxed but still mostly the same. Not everyone obeying the Law . The playgrounds are closed but you can go to the parks to take a walk etc. but keep your distance not that there are many people so it is not a problem. Have had a few nice days and the Park District Police were busy breaking up big groups of kids. All basketball hoops and tennis nets taken down also. City Police reporting domestic violence calls took a big rise.  Yes hope everything comes back to normal soon.

Ed, I retired from the Rockford Illinois PD and also do not miss it. Get together with guys I used to work with in the 70’s, I started in 69, and we all say the same thing how much it has changed and they can have it. In 2007 there was a vote of confidence on the Chief and it was 276 to6 against him. There were two different marches on city hall where the council room was packed and our union let the council know what the vote was. Nothing was done and he left over 5 years later. No one stays on any more to hit 30 years like before.

Every three or four days the helicopter would land in the open field at Andrews and 3 MP’s would be ready with food etc. to get on and go down to Stein and relieve the other three that were there.

Ed, Over the years when I mention that I was in Berlin ,66-69  287th MP, and bring up Steinstucken no one has ever heard of it and I can see why. What a unique place. Hard to explain  what Stein was . Was at a social club I belong to last weekend with my BUSMVA shirt on and the Berlin Emblem and one of the guys sitting at the bar came over to our table and said I thought I recognized the emblem on your shirt. Introduced ourselves , his first name is Paul , and he said he was there 87 to 91 in the 42 engineers. Showed him my BUSMVA card and told him about it and how to join.

Remember Willy Kitts was there a few times. If I remember right came out of the main gate at Andrews and went on the street. Before that was Linda’s Lounge. Spent some time in there. And of course out of the gate and go to the right and you had Golden Sonne and then Krammers. Great times.

Ed, Was in Berlin Aug. 66 to Feb. 69. Cannot remember any real bad weather and when I left in Feb. no snow on the ground and not that cold. Live in Illinois west of Chicago and had some power outages on Sat. We did not loose any power but homes across the alley did along with businesses some blocks away. And yes the heat and humidity high. A couple weeks ago a 20 lady working for school district was in one of the schools cleaning  along with a few other people, temp. 103, and fainted and hit her head and passed on, what a tragedy.

Just thinking about some of the old places. There was the White Horse bar not to far from Andrews if I remember. Also downtown was the Handel  Eck and the KBS and International next door. Of course the big three area also.

Ed, I remember Willy Kitts and also I believe down the street or close by Linda’s Lounge and then down around the corner Golden Sonne owner Hans Borowitz, not sure of spelling, and of course Crammers down the street.  What a great time and memories. When I left I did not quite realize what I was leaving , a once in a lifetime experience, looking back one thing I would not of done was take a leave to go home. Stayed right there and enjoyed the time there. Yes enjoy the holiday and flag down at sunrise and back up at noon.
